The last run of the Lady Sheaffer pens

The final lineup of Lady Sheaffer pens are easily identified by a short, bar-shaped clip with the Sheaffer White Dot at the top. Some early models will have the short conical nib, a holdover from the previous long clip pens, but this begins to give way, not later than 1973, to a recessed nib section across the line. Recessed nibs were made of stainless steel, 14 karat gold (US and UK), or 18 karat gold. The only reference I have showing 18 karat gold nibs is in a Sheaffer French and Spanish language catalog dated January 1973, suggesting that this gold content was used in countries other than the United States and United Kingdom.

This gallery article shows twenty-one known models. Of these, four 900 series models shown below have only been identified by model stickers on example pens and lack other Sheaffer documentation that clarifies production or sale dates as of this writing. Each of those will have (Date unknown) where the date would be. Pricing information is not included as the known primary documentation from the United States and United Kingdom has gaps and prices changed over time. That will be addressed in a later article. There are three 900 series models, 905, 906, and 907, not included below that are mentioned in the 1971 Sheaffer Service Parts Price List, but no catalogs or examples of these pens are known to exist. Model names follow the official model name in Sheaffer documentation or if the model has no name, the description of the finish is used and in those cases will appear in quotes.

The dates shown below include confirmed years the fountain pen models were sold, supported by Sheaffer catalogs, price lists, and/or advertisements and extrapolations of dates where there are gaps in the timeline. The earliest and latest dates offered for sale are confirmed from primary documentation. The last Lady Sheaffer fountain pens were catalogued in 1985. Lady Sheaffer model 620 ballpoint pens were offered for sale through 1989.

The definitive article on these pens is “Late Production Lady Sheaffer Pens c. 1967-1989” by Gary Ellison published in the fall 2022 Pennant. The photographs used in this gallery were taken by the author for that article.

Collecting late Lady Sheaffers

Lady Sheaffers made from 1971–1989 are not uncommon, but some models are significantly more difficult to find than others. They are a niche collectible pen, but interest has been gaining in the last few years. A complete collection of the 21 known production models is not going to be excessively expensive to pursue, especially if less than mint condition examples are acquired. As with other Sheaffer pens from the same period, they are good writers and reliable.
